The Back of The Menu

Did you ever notice that on the back of every menu in every Italian restaurant you have been to there is always a story about how the Restaurant started? It usually says that the Mother or Grandmother (lets call her Bina) grew up in Florence or Naples or Rome etc. and she learned the recipes from her mother who learned them from her mother etc. etc. Then it says that the Mother or Grandmother emigrated to the United States and she and her Italian husband (lets call him Antonio) opened up a little Italian restaurant with 4 tables, a tiny kitchen and no money. Then word travelled far and wide about the wonderful Original Old Style Italian Food being served in their restaurant and the restaurant has flourished and is now the best Italian Restaurant you will ever go to! Right? Well, the Rumari Story is no different. Vincent, the owner and chef has a mother named Bina and a father named Antonio and they are from Porticello Sicily. The family owned a restaurant there and decided to come to America in 1972. Bina taught Vincent and his brothers Sebastien, Bobby, Max and Sam how to cook, Vincent opened Rumari. Poppa Antonio still comes in every day to make the wonderful bread you are eating while Mama Bina stays home and watches soap operas. You can usually find them both in the Restaurant on Friday or Saturday evening, where they come for a free meal! If they don't want to eat at Rumari they drive to Huntington Beach to eat at Crivellos which is owned by son Bobby or they drive to Temecula to visit their other son Sebastien and their grandchildren and get a free meal there, also at Crivellos. Cooking is a tradition in the Crivello Family. So when in San Francisco go to Vincent's Cousin Mateo's famous San Francisco landmark "Caesars", near Fishermen's Wharf, When in Sicily stop in at Cousin Franco's "Franku u Piscaturi" in Porticello. Tell them "Vincent sent you"! So, as Paul Harvey says: "Now you Know the Rest of The Story" and you didn't even have to read it on the back of the menu! (Psst: It's not on the back of the menu!)
